Armed forces personnel work to protect a country’s security, to provide multi-national peace-keeping support and to deliver humanitarian aid relief operations. There are a wide variety of roles within the armed forces including operational officers, IT, engineering, logistics, healthcare and management.
Opportunities differ between the Republic and Northern Ireland. In the Republic of Ireland, the armed forces comprise the permanent defence force – army, naval service and air corps, and the army and naval reserve force. In Northern Ireland, opportunities exist within the British Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
Who would it suit?
Uniformed services can provide a rewarding career which gives you the satisfaction of serving your community and country. However, this career can also be very stressful and it is not a career path to be undertaken lightly. Competition is fierce and in many cases physically and mentally demanding – you'll need to be really committed to a career in this area to succeed. All candidates have to undertake a rigorous physical assessment.
You can gain experience in the defence forces through the Territorial Army and Army reserves. As with any career, work experience is an ideal way to get a taste for the career of your choice. However, experience is not essential.
Applications
Applicants to the defence forces can apply for graduate cadetships. Once you have completed the training programme you can move up the ranks.
Cadetship competitions for the Irish defence forces commence in January. You’ll need to get your application in before this time. If you wish to enter the British army you should contact the regional recruit office and request an information pack. There are several deadlines throughout the year depending on the region you would like to work in.
